using SAM printables, materials required, how to use

The above is just coloring and tracing. Unfortunately, I have not come up with a way to reuse paper after cutting it! Use scissors to practice cutting. I have a few recommendations below for varying levels of ability. You could also have your child try to RIP on the cutting lines. This encourages fine motor development as well as patience.

Products We Like

Scissors

  • Loop Scissors
    • These scissors are great for kids with low tone and underdeveloped fine motor skills.
    • They spring back open, only requiring the child to squeeze to cut.
    • These specific ones are very safe for little ones!
  • Spring-Assisted Scissors
    • These are great intro-scissors, even for children with no fine motor/tone/general development concerns.
    • The handy spring-assist allows the child to learn to squeeze and cut with a physical prompt to open the hand for the next cut.
    • Disengage it when your child is ready to use them like “regular” scissors!
  • Melissa and Doug Cutting Set
    • This is an AWESOME cutting practice set.
    • The scissors are typical kid-scissors.
    • The papers are thick and each page is progressively more challenging.
  • Melissa and Dough Cut and Tape Set
    • This contains the above set and a cute tape practice set. It is unrelated to this post, but I really recommend it! I am a huge Melissa and Doug fan 🙂

Crayons

  • Crayola Palm Grasp Crayons
    • Perfect for early artists!
  • Melissa and Doug Jumbo Triangular Crayons
    • Great for encouraging a tripod grasp
    • Very sturdy
  • Crayola Triangular Crayons
    • Also promotes that tripod grasp
    • We found these were easier to break than the Melissa and Doug style, but these are very popular!
  • Finger Crayons
    • There are tons of “finger crayon” options.
    • These are great for promoting fine motor development.

Dry Erase

  • BIC Intensity Dry Erase Markers
    • I LOVE these! They wipe away well and come in many fun colors.
  • EXPO Markers
    • Fine tipped
    • The caps come with a handy little eraser
  • Dry Erase Pockets
    • These are fantastic. Dry erase wipes off very well.
    • The pockets come with a nice assortment of dry erase markers.
  • Scotch Laminator
    • Reliable company
    • Comes with 20 sheets
  • Scotch Laminating Pouches
    • Refill – you’re going to need them!
  • Magic Eraser
    • If you use dry erase on the laminated sheets rather than the dry erase pouches, you will need the eraser to completely clean off the markers after coloring.
